Once, I listened to an entire BOLD album. "The search", I think it was. I don't remember exactly why.
Once, a bit later, I listened to an entire Earth Crisis album. "Destroy the machine", maybe. No doubt it was heavier. Or was it just heavy?
In Portuguese, Spanish and French, the same word means "heavy" and "annoying".
Lourd.
Pesado.
Something litteraly or symbolically difficult to bear. Next time I'll have to explain that interesting nuance, I'll start with an Earth Crisis song.
And once (because I am obstinate), I even listened to the Black Media SxE compilation, a bunch of highly militant rappers. That would be one of the worst experience I ever had with hip-hop.
So that was mainly what I know about straight edge music: boring content in a shitty form, or vice-versa.
And then I discovered WolfxDown EP.
Love at first sight?
God only knows how suspicious foxes are when it goes down to wolfes...
But sometimes...
4 songs. Strong and angry female vocals. And instead of the monstruously boring riffs, you got a groovy pack of breaks, accelerations, rhythm changes.
During one month, I walk my morning sleepness listening to the EP.
To my 9-to-5.
Unglorious and bleak winter dawns with just enough anger to make it to the next morning.
Nice surprise when I checked the RatRace lyrics: they were exactly matching the grey daily life stuck under my eyes that makes me look like what I am: an underpaid zombie.
The other songs are about alienation, burning witches and the traditionnal eco-cide. Nothing really new, nor especially well written, but at least no intolerant straight edge shit.
You will surely find the music and the lyrics on their bandcamp. On your way, you may take the opportunity to listen to their new songs, and I won't blame you.
You shall have a look at the guitarist interview on Nature with No plagues blog.
